Technology Wood

For tech at Tamaki I am now in hard materials and I am creating a box, I chose to make a box for myself but my mum can also use it too. This is the best choice for me because if I create this then me or my mum can have more storage space. It will be used as a box filled with cons or whatever we choose to put in. I will need to consider making it stable so that if my brother finds it and plays with it it won't break.

What about the food? p26b

  • Takeaways
  • Community
  • Outside of Antarctica
At Scott Base you use a lot of heat just by keeping warm so you need good and nutritious food, But if you stay at Scott base you can’t just walk to the nearest takeaways for a snack. The chef’s can not just go to the supermarket as well and feeding the community takes a lot of organization because everything comes from outside of Antarctica, everything from ordering it and storing it has to be thought out.
Who’s in charge of feeding?p28a
  • Donna Weightman
  • October
  • New Zealand
  • Antaractica
The most recent chef for Scott Base is Donna Weightman. New chefs arrive at the beginning of October, over the summer more people have to be fed so there is more work. Since it gets hard there are two chefs working in the kitchen, the summer chef works for four months and the winter chef stays for the whole year until the next October. Donna has worked in many places but working in Antarctica is definitely unique.
Where does the food come from? p28b

  • Scott Base
  • Bulk
  • Summer chefs
A bulk order of food is brought by a ship to Scott Base in the beginning of February, the summer chefs order what they want by plane but the flights are canceled because of the poor weather.
How is the food stored? p28c
  • Freezers
  • Sprayed with oil
  • Organised a week earlier
Even in Antarctica you still need fridges and freezers. If Donna ever wanted to open up a can Donna would need to take the can out and then a week later she can use them, so you just have to be organised for the following week. Often the problem is that the foods get cold and the eggs get special treatment they get spray with oil and because of that the eggs will last for ten months or more without going off.
What do they eat? p29
  • Home
  • Special menus
  • American Night

The meals that are created at Scott Base is just like having meals at home, Chef also arrange special menus for occasions like last sunset, midwinter dinner, christmas, first sunrise, three polar plunges. The foods that they eat are nachos, lasagna, pizza, thai curries, sushi, meatballs with spaghetti, rhubarb pudding, apple pie and icecream. Every Thursday night during winter they have a thing called “American Night” it is where people sign up on a noticeboard at their base and come down to have dinner, Usually chocolate is on the top of the list.

  • 7 am to 6:30pm
  • Gym
  • Read
  • Watch a movie
Some of the people that work/live there gets work off on Sundays so then they can watch a movie or read or even go to the gym, The usual work hours are from 7am to 6:30pm.
Leftovers? p30b

  • Kitchen
  • Leftover
Whenever someone has their work off they can just help themselves to the kitchen, they also get to cook whatever they would like to eat or just eat the leftovers from the fridge.
Need for lots of water? p30c
  • Scott Base
  • Destination
  • 40,000 litre tanks
Fire is a hazard since the air is so dry there so that’s why Scott Base need a lot of water reserve. Water is obtained by the destination which they take the salt out of the sea water and stored in four 40,000 litre tanks.
Missing favourite foods? p32a
  • Chocolate, Biscuits and more
  • In the winter there are greens
  • hydroponics
During the summer the food staff miss the chocolate, biscuit and their favourite chips. In the winter once the veggies have run out they start to pine for things like strawberries, oranges, bananas, pineapple. In the winter they can still grow greens by using hydroponics unit to grow things like lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes, they use artificial lighting and the hydroponics unit produces enough for a small salad everyday.
Cooking in Antarctica? p32b
  • Passion
  • Skills
  • Rewarding place
Cooking is Donna’s passion, in Antarctica working at Scott Base has been the most rewarding place she’s worked at.  She can use her skills to make her own pastry, bread, pies and pasta and a lot of other good bakes.
