Tha Zin W1D1 Summer Learning Journey (Explorers) Activity 2

Summer Learning Journey
Week 1: Physical Limits
Day 1: Explorers

Activity 2: Discovering Aotearoa
Task Information:

Many people believe that Kupe was the first explorer to discover Aotearoa, New Zealand in about 1300. He navigated his way by waka to Aotearoa from Hawaiki using traditional Polynesian navigation techniques - just like Nainoa Thompson (from Activity 1) did much later on. Legend says that he followed a great octopus all the way to Aotearoa/New Zealand and finally destroyed it in Cook Strait (the water between the North and South Islands).

Many years later, a Dutch explorer from The Netherlands, Abel Tasman, was exploring the Pacific Ocean when he came across New Zealand. He thought that he was the first person to ‘discover’ the country (despite the fact that Māori already lived in New Zealand!) and made the claim in 1642 that he had ‘discovered’ a new land. His exploration of New Zealand inspired many other European explorers to follow his lead and travel to the Oceania.

-------------
Blogging Task:
For this activity we would like you to think about your own experiences and your own cultural background. Where does your family come from? Do they come from Europe like Abel Tasman, Polynesia like Kupe, or somewhere else? On your blog, please tell us about your cultural background. Where do you and your family come from?

🇨🇳 My cultural background 🇲🇲

Tha Zin W1D1 Summer Learning Journey (Explorers) Activity 1

Week 1: Physical Limits
Day 1: Explorers
I am ready to take on the challenge that the people behind Summer Learning Journey has for me and all the other bloggers.

For this year's Summer Learning Journey we are going to be looking and learning people who changed the world by sports and exploration.

Activity 1: Setting Sail
Those from the Pacific Nation have always been great at navigating ever since ancient times. They navigated through out the Pacific Ocean without the help of modern navigating aid. Wondering how they did it? they would use what’s around them like using the weather to navigate. During the day time they would use the sun, clouds, birds flying patterns, swells and more but when it got dark they would use the stars and planets.

How do we know that all of this is true? We tried it out, a crew in 2015 stopped at the Pt England Reserve just down our school and gave the Manaiakalni schools in Auckland a visit.

Imagine going on the voyage with them.. wonder how it would be like. I'd be homesick and miss the ones back where I live but I'm sure that it wouldn't be that bad, it would be exciting and quite an amazing adventure.

So for this activity I have to pick 10 food items I would take along with me on my adventure and write down why I would. (Remember there is no fridges or freezers)
Photo:
http://www.hokulea.com/update-point-england-welcome/

My food picks:

1. Dried fruits
2. Chips
3. Nuts
4. Rice
5. Lollies
6. Canned food
7. Pretzels
8. Muesli bars
9. Honey
10. Bread

Why?
Dried Fruits - I would bring it because it's delicious and also a pretty healthy choice. Fun fact did you know that one piece of dried fruit gives you the same nutrients as a fresh fruit would?

Chips - Chips can't go wrong except for when they go stale.. but all you have to do to keep it from going stale is make sure that it doesn't have that much air in the bag. Plus chips take at least 2-3 weeks to fully go stale and I wouldn't mind having a snack on the ride.

Nuts- Gotta still eat healthy even though parents aren't around! also nuts give us a range of nutrients.

Rice - Rice is another good idea to bring along since it's easy for transport and it's your choice if you wanna cook it before and put it in a container or just bring the grains.

Lollies - Although these aren't the best idea and aren't that good for our teeth we're still gonna need some energy and lollies do give us sugar rushes.

Canned Food - Again this isn't a healthy choice but it's easy to take and easy to keep edible.

Pretzels - I'm pretty picky when it comes to food and I'm not a fan of pretzels like my friends are but I'm not saying I wouldn't eat it, although it does have very little fibre we still do get energy from it.

Muesli Bars - It's another easy food to transport as they all come in boxes in a tight packaging!

Honey - Why not bring it? it's good as a topping and also pretty good for our health and reduces many risks.

Bread - Goes well with honey doesn't it? bread also gives us many nutrients and is great with honey.

---
Task Description: It's the summer holidays!! although it's time for relaxation and time away from school we still gotta keep up with our learning! For this year's Summer Learning Journey we are looking at people who changed the world by sports and exploration.

Six Sentences Narrative

Six Sentences Narrative

Once upon a time, there lived an idiotic wolf named Tyler. He lived in a small remote tree house, where he was abandoned when he was 2 and half weeks old. He was a talented woodworker, who at 7 months was able to create a toy wood truck. Sadly, as he was an orphan he was very lonely. Tyler yearned to meet his parents. He then hired a private detective who then found his parents and then the three happily reunited.

Mixture Of Problems

What Makes An Effective Leader?

Do you have what it takes to be an effective leader? It may mean being dedicated and staying till the end, or looking at both sides and solving the problem. It can also mean being responsible for the mistakes and decisions you make. Some say that leaders are born and not made, but that’s false you can actually learn to become the best leader you can be. If you can check off these 3 qualities then you are a perfect leader but you just don’t know it.

Firstly if you are a leader you should stay till the very end and work hard, also if you say you’re going to do it or finish it then you should finish it off or do it properly. If you are going to be a leader you should be dedicated to being the best you can. Most leaders have this quality, and because of this they work hard and are dedicated to everything.

Next if an issue appears then you should look at both sides of the problem, discuss it and then carefully make a decision that both sides would like. If you were a judge in court you would have to look and listen carefully at both sides, then you would have to come to a decision that hopefully both sides would come to an agreement.

Also if you are a leader you should be taking ownership for the decisions and the mistakes you make. An example of a bad leader is when you decide to blame it all on someone for the mistakes you chose. Whenever you do make a mistake which everyone does since noone is perfect, you should apologize and promise to be better next time since this creates a bond with the rest of the group.

In conclusion being an effective and a great leader is a great quality to have and also very difficult to be, I just don’t know how some pull it off as if it’s no big deal. There are more qualities that most leaders have but these are just some of the three. If you have these three qualities (or some that I didn’t list) then you are a hidden leader!

Cross Country 2019!

Yesterday was our annual school cross country where it's like a race in your year grade. Since I am now a year seven sadly the teachers push us even harder and we had to run two laps, in total which is 3 km although it doesn't sound like much it is really really long and pretty tough.

As soon as lunch had finished we all lined up with the year seven girls in the front, the year seven boys after them and then the year eight girls then the year eight boys. We then walked to the courts and sat down waiting for everyone else to arrive, another school also came to compete with us and their school chose their best runners in their grade.

As we waited for us to called we played a few games and entertained each other, when I went to go to the to toilet when I heard Mr J say "Next is the year 7 girls!" when I heard that I dashed out and ran to the starting line. On your marks.... Get Set... *SNAP!* we all ran as fast as we could.

Running past the muddy grass we splashed ourselves and some of the people behind us, as I nearly finished and was on my second lap I felt my legs starting to get tired and it was almost impossible to just job slowly. Although it was though we all managed to get through it and after that we all were drained, we then got handed a water bottle and watched and waited for our friends to come.

In the end I was really proud of myself and ended coming 4th which wasn't so bad, I also regret not trying my best and my hardest but there's always next year! I enjoyed it and felt extremely proud of myself for finishing that race. Have you ever done something very tiring and extremely tough to go through? Have you ever felt really proud of that accomplishment? Well I am really proud for what I did and I'm sure everyone else who participated in this years cross country did too! Overall I am really proud and I mean proud of myself.

Tha Zin Evaluation.

Evaluation

1. How well did I do in completing all of the things that I needed to do for this project?? 8/10

2. the design ideas? when we started planning we had to draw 8 designs and pick 1

3. the final choice? I chose the box since it seemed quite simple and easy for me to make, and also since I'm new at hard materials I decided to give it a shot.

4.  the working drawing? the working drawing took me a few minutes to design and look at some of the working drawings so that I could make my own.

5. the marking out? I had some trouble with it but I did manage to get it done after 3 or 4 tries.

6. the sawing? sawing needed a bit of strength and I was a bit tired after it but I did do a mistake but still worked out.

7. the chiselling? chiselling was hard and I even cut myself but that was the lesson that I learnt that day. I also found it kind of difficult.

8. the assembly?  assembling the box was kinda tricky because some of the joints I had made was too loose or too tight.

9. looking at what you have produced,

10. does it work? I made a box and it works like it's supposed to

Tha Zin KPMG Trip

Today we went on a trip to KPMG all the year 7 & 8 extension group came but there were some people that were picked to go to KPMG. We had loads of fun! and we even got delicious morning tea and lunch. The reason why we went there was because to get to know more about our school topic which is "Something In The Water"

When we arrived at the KPMG building we were greeted by Justine and also a few of the staff members. We then walked into the infinity room which was pretty much just like a lounge, Justine told us that Nate the chef had left which I didn't even know who that was since it was the first time I've ever been to KPMG. After we then got to the introductions and got to know all of those staff members and then we met two ladies called Suzy and Lucy who told us about what they do at Tonkin + Taylor. Suzy and Lucy also told us about the environment and how they are helping the marine animals.

We then had some morning tea which was delicious scones with jam and cream, we then went to sustainable coastlines which explained to us about beach clean ups and how we can get involved we also talked about planting trees. We then walked around and checked out the place and also did you know that the toilets are compostable toilet and some of us even went and tried it.

After looking around the place we then took a group photo and started to walk back to KPMG, when we arrived at KPMG we split into four teams and got given a piece of paper that had a Māori god and we had to search what they were in charge of and research on what is threatening it. After researching about the god that we got we had a mini break and got to eat lunch, lunch was amazing we had mini burgers, mini pizza, curly fries, salad and fruit kebab, our god that we had to research about was Tāne Mahuta and the thing that was threatening Tāne Mahuta was plastic. After our lunch break we went back to our desks and started creating a robot that would help clean up the plastics and to help the forest and help out with the animals that live in the forests, we split up into two groups and one group worked on the robot itself and the other team which I was in worked on a tree sculpture which the robot was supposed to create out of plastic.

When we finished with our robot and our tree sculpture and the time was up we all shared what our robot does and what it does to help out. After we all presented it was time to go back to school so we then cleaned up our desks and Bethan said a on behalf of us, after all the goodbyes we then walked to the bus and we drove back to school. Overall I really enjoyed going to KPMG and I think that the others did too.

What Is Plastic Pollution??

What is Plastic Pollution??

Plastic pollution is the build up of plastic objects including plastic bottles, plastic utensils and etc. Because of plastic that ends up in the sea/ocean get eaten up by the marine animals. micro plastic smells like food to fish so they end up swallowing it in California and Indonesia ¼ of the fish is plastic and we end up eating the plastic that the fish has consumed.

Something that I can do for the plastic free July challenge which me and my friend Jedida are in a challenge where we cannot bring plastic to school, also since both of us don’t really use plastic utensils that is something we are avoiding. Since plastic is the most affordable item/object in the world there are many of them.

The biggest garbage patch is called the great pacific garbage patch or also known as GPGP, Gpgp sits in the eastern pacific ocean between California and Hawaii. You can help with the plastic pollution by trying the plastic free July challenge yourself, you can reduce your use of single use plastics or you can just stop using plastic. you can also go down to the beach with a rubbish bag and pick up some pieces of rubbish that is floating in the sea and also that are just laying on the sand. So would you like to give going plastic free a try??

Tha Zin Recording Of Hard Materials

I used a steel ruler, pencil and a piece of wood to make a full size working drawing of my box because on the drawing when we make a mistake we can always fix it but when we just start cutting the wood we cannot fix that. I used a steel ruler, pencil, wood and a tri-square to copy the measurements from my drawing onto the piece of wood we had to create our design. I then marked a square line (at 90°) across using the steel ruler and the pencil. I cut off the first piece of wood using a saw and a bench hook, I then marked out the joint so then I could cut it and use the chisel to get a join of the wood. After making my first joint I then made sure that my longer piece of wood had fit into the joint and at first it was very tight then I just carried on and made my second joint, both of them were very tight so I asked help and Mr Grundy cut a bit out of the joint and it fit perfectly. Later Mr Grundy out 2 piece of wood so that when we put all the pieces together they made a box, and now I'm waiting for the box to dry. The next step is the lid which Mr Grundy then got a MDF (medium density fibreboard) and cut it to the length of my box and the width of the outside of my box, he then got a piece of wood and cut it to the inside of my box. Now I'm waiting for the lid to dry because Mr Grundy put glue on so that they could stick together really well.

Technology Wood

For tech at Tamaki I am now in hard materials and I am creating a box, I chose to make a box for myself but my mum can also use it too. This is the best choice for me because if I create this then me or my mum can have more storage space. It will be used as a box filled with cons or whatever we choose to put in. I will need to consider making it stable so that if my brother finds it and plays with it it won't break.

Summary
Living at Scott Base p26a
  • 50 yrs, 80 people
  • winter 10-12
  • scientists support staff

In the winter there are around 10 to 12 people living/ working at Scott Base. In the summer there are around 80 people living/working at Scott Base. Many of the people are either scientists or support staff who has important jobs such as chefs, kitchen hands, cleaners, mechanics and engineers.
What about the food? p26b

  • Takeaways
  • Community
  • Outside of Antarctica
At Scott Base you use a lot of heat just by keeping warm so you need good and nutritious food, But if you stay at Scott base you can’t just walk to the nearest takeaways for a snack. The chef’s can not just go to the supermarket as well and feeding the community takes a lot of organization because everything comes from outside of Antarctica, everything from ordering it and storing it has to be thought out.
Who’s in charge of feeding?p28a
  • Donna Weightman
  • October
  • New Zealand
  • Antaractica
The most recent chef for Scott Base is Donna Weightman. New chefs arrive at the beginning of October, over the summer more people have to be fed so there is more work. Since it gets hard there are two chefs working in the kitchen, the summer chef works for four months and the winter chef stays for the whole year until the next October. Donna has worked in many places but working in Antarctica is definitely unique.
Where does the food come from? p28b

  • Scott Base
  • Bulk
  • Summer chefs
A bulk order of food is brought by a ship to Scott Base in the beginning of February, the summer chefs order what they want by plane but the flights are canceled because of the poor weather.
How is the food stored? p28c
  • Freezers
  • Sprayed with oil
  • Organised a week earlier
Even in Antarctica you still need fridges and freezers. If Donna ever wanted to open up a can Donna would need to take the can out and then a week later she can use them, so you just have to be organised for the following week. Often the problem is that the foods get cold and the eggs get special treatment they get spray with oil and because of that the eggs will last for ten months or more without going off.
What do they eat? p29
  • Home
  • Special menus
  • American Night

The meals that are created at Scott Base is just like having meals at home, Chef also arrange special menus for occasions like last sunset, midwinter dinner, christmas, first sunrise, three polar plunges. The foods that they eat are nachos, lasagna, pizza, thai curries, sushi, meatballs with spaghetti, rhubarb pudding, apple pie and icecream. Every Thursday night during winter they have a thing called “American Night” it is where people sign up on a noticeboard at their base and come down to have dinner, Usually chocolate is on the top of the list.
Working hours? p30a
  • 7 am to 6:30pm
  • Gym
  • Read
  • Watch a movie
Some of the people that work/live there gets work off on Sundays so then they can watch a movie or read or even go to the gym, The usual work hours are from 7am to 6:30pm.
Leftovers? p30b
  • Help them selves
  • Kitchen
  • Leftover
Whenever someone has their work off they can just help themselves to the kitchen, they also get to cook whatever they would like to eat or just eat the leftovers from the fridge.
Need for lots of water? p30c
  • Scott Base
  • Destination
  • 40,000 litre tanks
Fire is a hazard since the air is so dry there so that’s why Scott Base need a lot of water reserve. Water is obtained by the destination which they take the salt out of the sea water and stored in four 40,000 litre tanks.
Missing favourite foods? p32a
  • Chocolate, Biscuits and more
  • In the winter there are greens
  • hydroponics
During the summer the food staff miss the chocolate, biscuit and their favourite chips. In the winter once the veggies have run out they start to pine for things like strawberries, oranges, bananas, pineapple. In the winter they can still grow greens by using hydroponics unit to grow things like lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes, they use artificial lighting and the hydroponics unit produces enough for a small salad everyday.
Cooking in Antarctica? p32b
  • Passion
  • Skills
  • Rewarding place
Cooking is Donna’s passion, in Antarctica working at Scott Base has been the most rewarding place she’s worked at.  She can use her skills to make her own pastry, bread, pies and pasta and a lot of other good bakes.

This week’s book is called The Dinosaur Trail this article is a nonfiction article. It’s about a Sedimentologist named Dr Greg Browne and he had been trying to find more things about the environment when he goes to Whanganui Inlet to find out more about sand, mud, and clay when he finds strange looking footprints and he has an investigation to find out which animal created the footprint.

Dr Greg Browne has tried most of the animal but none them match so the last one was dinosaurs and everything matched the age of the rocks was the right time frame from when dinosaurs still existed so it must’ve been them, and also the place was a coastal mudflat a place where Dinosaurs might have lived. Dr Greg Browne researched about what he had found and look at all of the photos of dinosaur prints and noticed that the ones he found belonged to the sauropods.

Before Dr Greg had made his discovery public he got some scientists to check his theory things like this are called a peer review, then he took a team of  geologists and paleontologists to the site to take a look for themselves everyone had agreed and everything fitted. Dr Greg published a report in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, it was called “First New Zealand Record of probable dinosaur footprints” in his report he claimed that they were sauropod prints.

I recommend this text to year fives up to year sevens and maybe even year eights who are interested in learning more about dinosaurs. Also if they would like to become a geologists then they can, and this book taught me that a job called geologists actually exists I never really knew up until now so this book can teach people about being a geologist and studying things like sand, mud, clay and many more.

This week’s book is called Rātā and the Tōtara tree this text is a fiction text. It’s about a guy named Rātā and he had been finding a tree to build his canoe and it took him about a few days to find the perfect tree that would float but at the same time has to be sturdy enough to use the canoe for a long time.

When Rātā finds the perfect tree since he was so excited at the time he straightaway asked his mens to chop down the tree, Although Rātā has forgotten to do the ritual and to ask permission from Tāne to chop the tree down. The next morning him and his mens went back to the same location to carve out the canoe but finds the chopped tree back in it’s original position with no marks, so they repeat the process of chopping the tree down and the ended up with the tree standing up again.

On the last night he hides in the bush and sees that heaps of animals gather up and puts the tree back in position, in that moment Rātā realized that all this time he had forgotten to do a ritual. Early next morning he does the ritual while walks to the tree he then sees that the animals had carven out a canoe for him and ends up with a canoe as a gift from the animals and Tāne.

I recommend this text to year fives up to year sevens and maybe even year eights it could teach them about how to respect other people’s things and to always ask before you use it. Itt can also teach them about learning to respect the environment so that the next generation can live a healthy and nice environment, and it can teach them to treat the beach, forests, and anywhere else as if it was their home.

I enjoyed learning the different techniques of sewing and the thing that I learnt while drawing out a cushion, cutting, learning to sew and sewing and putting wool inside of cushions I learnt a few things about the sewing machine, I normally just hand sew at home and I was quite excited that this term I got to experience using a sewing machine.

Overall I really enjoyed Textile and I am looking forward to the next class that we are going to and we are still going to be in Textile for about 2 more weeks but then we will be transferring to another class.

it’s about a boy named Timiona and he is about to have a dance competition with most of his classmates and his friends. Timiona “borrows” a medal that was from his great great grandfather who got it for bravery in the war, Timiona uses the medal as a lucky charm and hopes to win the dance competition with it.

When it was almost Timiona’s turn to go up he panics when he found out that his green hoodie had gone missing and in his hoodie was the medal, he looked and looked for his hoodie and the medal but couldn’t find it. Timiona ended up dancing without his hoodie and the medal but still wins, he goes back home hoodie-less and also medal-less. I recommend this text to kids and teens who has an interest in dancing and books and texts, and also you don’t really need something like a special medal or just something that means alot to you or to your family you don’t really need it to be your lucky charm you just need confidence in yourself.

Tha Zin Immersion Assembly

Today on the 29th of April which is also the first day of term 2 of school, this term's theme is I like your latitude. The question that we are focusing on is "Where in the latitude are you?" and also we are going to be learning about Longitude and Latitude this term.

All of the teams each made a mini movie to show what they are going to be learning in their classes and even Mr Vogt, Mrs Lagitupu and Miss Va'afusuaga made a mini movie of their own since each year they don't get to make their own movie. Team 1's movie was about saving bees and trying to create more of the bees so that they don't go extinct, using latitude and longitude they are going to find the nearest bee hive and try to help them to survive in the wild.

Team 2's mini movie was about when they had a Easter egg hunt last term and how they found the eggs, to find them team 2 looked under, over, left, right and all around their space to find the chocolate covered marshmallow eggs. This term they will be hiding their own treasure and will be creating their own treasure maps and once they have completed their maps they will give the map to their friends and they will try to find the hidden treasure.

Team 3's movie was about pick a path this term they will be focusing on pick a paths and they will be getting to pick where they go, in the movie Miss Scanlan gave an example where she was walking to school and along the way she met a fairy who gave her some choices to go to make the walk to school a bit more fun.

Team 4's movie was about how all the teachers accept for Mr Goodwin all gathered at pak n save and Mr Goodwin gave them a task that they could not use their gps or their car to get back to school he left a map close to where they met at and off they went trying to find the way back to school, when they arrived back at school they were all mad at Mr Goodwin because he was the one who made them go through what they just went through.
Team 5's little play was about VTA which stands for Virtual Travel Agency Miss Tapuke and her family wanted to go on a two week vacation and the first continent that they went to was Europe where the Eiffel tower was and the second location they went to was North America where they went to Disneyland and the third place they went to was Africa where Miss Tapuke got to pet a lion in the wild the last place that they went to was Asia where they went to the great wall of China.

S.M.C which stands for Sporty Space, Maker Space and Creative Space Miss Va'afusuaga who is the Sporty Space teacher and Mr Vogt who is the teacher for Maker Space and lastly Mrs Lagitupu who is Creative Space teacher also created their own movie, their movie was about Teachers in Space it was about what time they wake up, how they get to school, how much time they take to get to school and which way to go to school, and also they showed all the things that they need to take care of at school.

My favourite out of all it was Teachers in Space I enjoyed seeing their morning routine and how they take care of the emergency's at school. Mr Vogt helped pick up the rubbish so that the "virus" does not spread around the school and Mrs Lagitupu took care of all the coding and laptop stuff and Miss Va'afusuaga who took care of the meteoroid from hitting earth.

Overall I am very very excited for what we are going to be learning this term and excited about my animation and also about learning latitude and longitude and learning about all the continents and where they are.
